Eggs all look the same on the outside — but crack one open and you can tell exactly how fresh it is.

On the outside, chicken eggs look mostly alike. However, their appearance differs slightly on the inside. A fresh egg covers a smaller area, and its yolk and white are firm. An egg that has been on the shelf for a long time will have a much flatter yolk and its white will be dispersed. In fact, if an egg is really fresh, you can even pick up the yolk between your thumb and forefinger.
