What Causes a Rash?

Red, itchy bumps can appear for many different reasons — some you might not expect.

When you see red, itchy bumps on your skin, you may have a rash. You should avoid scratching the bumps and see a doctor. Some people get rashes when they touch poison ivy or when they come into contact with certain chemicals. Some illnesses such as scarlet fever and measles cause rashes. Some people get rashes when they eat certain types of food such as chocolates, peanuts or cheese. Tiny mites, too small to be seen, can cause a rash too. These might have entered the skin from your surroundings such as your bed or clothes.
